Matheus is a Senior Associate in our international arbitration group based in Washington, DC.
A native of Brazil, Matheus is qualified to practice law in both Brazil and New York. His practice focuses on international arbitrations in Latin America, with particular emphasis in Brazil. He has significant experience advising clients in contractual, post-M&A and insolvency disputes across a range of sectors, including oil & gas, mining and metals, renewable energy and the food and agriculture industries.
Before joining Freshfields, Matheus spent five years in the dispute resolution group of a leading Brazilian law firm and completed a secondment at a Brazilian renewable energy company.
Matheus holds a law degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), and two LL.M. degrees from Fundação Getulio Vargas (Brazil) and University of Virginia (US). He is fluent in Portuguese, English and Spanish.
He is an active member of the international arbitration community, including the Rising Arbitrators Initiative (RAI) and the Brazilian Arbitration Committee (CBar). He also served as the North America Representative for Young ICCA. He was recognized as a Rising Star by Legal 500 in 2018 and Associate to Watch by Chambers Global in 2024.
- Representing a Brazilian conglomerate in a post-M&A ICC arbitration seated in São Paulo and governed by Brazilian law, arising out of a share purchase agreement and related to a dispute over the control of a pulp-and-paper company in Brazil.
- Representing a German conglomerate in the food and agriculture sector in a post-M&A ICC arbitration seated in Frankfurt and governed by New York law, arising out of an asset purchase agreement.
- Representing a global major industrial company in a post-M&A ICC arbitration seated in São Paulo and governed by Brazilian law, concerning the exercise of a put option and the breach of a non-compete in a shareholders’ agreement.
- Representing an American company that operates offshore support vessels in an arbitration arising out of a Bareboat Charter Agreement.
- Advising an American oil & gas company in a potential dispute arising out of a Joint Operating Agreement.
- Representing investment funds in the insolvency and restructuring proceedings of a Brazilian offshore oil & gas services company.
- Representing investment funds in the insolvency and restructuring proceedings of a Brazilian telecommunications company.
- Representing the trustee in the insolvency and restructuring of Eneva S.A., a Brazilian private natural gas company with onshore fields in Brazil.
