About
Paulina is an associate in Freshfields’ international arbitration group based in our Frankfurt office.
Paulina is a Mexican qualified lawyer. She specialises in investment arbitration, human rights and public international law. She advises and represents both corporations and States in a variety of sectors, including energy and infrastructure. She is a member of our Latin America international arbitration group. Prior to joining Freshfields, Paulina was an Auxiliary Law Clerk at the Mexican Supreme Court.
Paulina holds a master’s degree in International Legal Studies from New York University. She speaks Spanish and English and is fluent in French.
Additional Information
Investment disputes:
- Representing the largest insurance company in the world by total assets in an ICSID arbitration against a Latin American State arising from tax measures;
- Representing a Spanish energy company in an ICSID arbitration against a Latin American State arising from its measures affecting the claimants' investments in a solar power plant;
- Representing the German financial services provider Portigon AG (formerly WestLB) in an ICSID arbitration brought under the Energy Charter Treaty against the Kingdom of Spain. The dispute arises out of Spain’s changes to its feed-in-tariff regime for renewable energy;
- Representing a Spanish investor in an ICSID arbitration against the Argentine Republic in relation to a highway concession;
- Acting for a European State in an ICSID arbitration brought under multiple bilateral investment treaties due to the termination of a port concession.
Advisory work:
- Advising a European mining company regarding potential investment treaty claims against a Latin American State arising from tax measures;
- Advising an Asian oil and gas company regarding potential investment treaty claims against a Latin American State arising from tax measures and customs duties;
- Advising a Spanish company, in relation to risk analysis and access to international remedies in the event of expropriation of a potential investment;
- Advising a European renewable energy investor in connection with potential arbitration against a Latin American state.
