Yantao Zheng's Story
Yantao Zheng is a Legal Consultant in the Global Transactions team at Freshfields, based in the firm’s Beijing office. He has been with the firm for just over a year. During this time, he has worked on a wide range of cross‑border transactions, including Hong Kong IPO mandates and post‑listing regulatory compliance matters, which now form a significant part of his day‑to‑day work and have allowed him to gain early exposure to complex, market‑driven advisory work.
One of the most challenging aspects of Yantao’s role has been learning to navigate complexity under time pressure. Working on live transactions — particularly Hong Kong IPOs — requires the ability to synthesize large volumes of factual and legal information quickly, identify key issues with precision, and communicate them clearly and persuasively to a highly sophisticated regulatory audience.
The most rewarding moments have come when his contributions have meaningfully advanced a transaction. There is particular satisfaction in seeing a submission he helped draft generate a positive regulatory response, or in watching a client achieve a milestone after years of preparation. These moments serve as a reminder that even highly technical legal work can have tangible and lasting impact for clients and organizations.
Of the Freshfields Code, the value that resonates most strongly with Yantao is excellence — not as an abstract pursuit of perfection, but as a disciplined commitment to rigor and care, even when the details may go unnoticed. In legal practice, the difference between a good answer and the right one often lies in detail that is easy to overlook. He sees this standard consistently modeled by the Partners and senior associates he works with, and it is one he continually strives to meet in his own work.
For students joining the Legal Consultant program, Yantao’s advice is straightforward: stay genuinely curious and avoid waiting until you feel completely ready before contributing. The learning curve is steep but manageable, and colleagues are invested in helping you succeed. Asking questions early and often and taking the time to understand the commercial context behind legal issues can make a significant difference.
One particularly formative experience came when Yantao led the negotiation of approximately 50 cornerstone investment agreements for a single Hong Kong IPO within less than a month. Managing that volume of parallel negotiations — each with its own commercial dynamics — while maintaining consistency across all documents was both demanding and career‑defining. It reinforced the importance of organization, decisiveness and clarity under pressure, alongside strong technical legal skills and confidence in taking ownership of a complex workstream.
Outside of work, Yantao enjoys planning his travels. Researching destinations, mapping routes and discovering lesser‑known places offers a different kind of creativity and focus. While distinct from legal practice, the careful planning it requires mirrors the discipline, structure and attention to detail that underpin effective legal work.
