Haider's story

I’m Haider, a second-year undergraduate law student at the University of Nottingham. To build on my academic learning and gain practical experience, I recently completed a two-week Work Experience Programme at the Bahrain office. It was an experience that proved both rewarding and insightful.

I was particularly keen to join Freshfields because of its reputation in global transactions and the opportunity to learn about areas of law that shape international business. During the placement I was introduced to a wide range of legal concepts, including indemnities, representations and warranties, liability and exclusion clauses, disclosure letters, and the mechanics of sale and purchase agreements. I also gained exposure to corporate governance and directors’ duties in the UK, as well as the fundamentals of project finance and pre-contractual negotiations.

My work included preparing a deed of assignment of loans with associated finance documentation, as well as undertaking research to support ongoing matters. Alongside this, I completed training modules on anti-money laundering, anti-bribery and corruption, and global risk, which reinforced how central compliance is to Freshfields’ global practice. Sessions on business development and environmental initiatives gave me a broader perspective on the firm’s priorities and the values that underpin its work.

Another highlight of the programme was the chance to connect with colleagues beyond the Global Transactions team. I joined a training call focused on drafting considerations when advising clients, which provided a valuable insight into how technical detail is translated into practical legal advice. I also met with colleagues from Business Development, Business Support and Human Resources, which highlighted the range of expertise working alongside the lawyers to deliver for clients. These experiences gave me a greater appreciation for the collaborative nature of Freshfields’ network, particularly the way offices across the MENA region work together to support complex, cross-border matters.

What made the internship especially distinctive, however, was the mentorship I received. I am particularly grateful to Harnek Shoker, whose guidance and encouragement went far beyond what I had anticipated from an internship. He took time each day to walk me through complex documents, answer questions with patience, and share practical insights into how lawyers approach transactions. That investment in my development made a lasting impact on my confidence and understanding. I am also thankful to Ghalya Bukhowa, who from the very first day shared her knowledge generously and entrusted me with tasks that stretched my skills and broadened my experience.

Upon reflection, this combination of substantive learning, exposure to Freshfields’ international network, and genuine mentorship made my time in Bahrain invaluable. I leave with a stronger grasp of transactional practice, a deeper appreciation for the role of integrity and compliance in global business, and a sense of how Freshfields’ people make its culture so distinctive.
