James is Global Chief Financial Officer, responsible for leading Freshfields’ global finance function and driving strategic and operational performance. With over 25 years of leadership experience, he brings a distinctive blend of financial and operational expertise, having held senior roles at J.P. Morgan Chase including Global Head of Sustainable Investing Integration and Global COO & CFO of Asset Management’s Global Equities business.
James sees his role as a central force for innovation and transformation – more than just compiling numbers, developing a deep understanding of what they mean and how they can be used to drive performance. He leads a team focused on delivering insights that empower the business to make informed, forward-looking decisions. His approach is rooted in curiosity, collaboration and a deep commitment to continuous improvement.
Before joining Freshfields in June 2025 and in addition to the roles previously mentioned James held a range of leadership roles at J.P. Morgan Asset Management, including COO for the US Equity business and CFO & COO for the Technology & Operations division. He began his career in aerospace engineering before transitioning into finance, driven by a fascination with how businesses work and what makes them better.
James is passionate about building high-performing teams and fostering a culture of shared accountability. He is also a board member of the Make-A-Wish Foundation in Connecticut, reflecting his commitment to responsible business and community impact.
