Freshfields advises BAE Systems on the sale of its 49% stake in Air Astana

Global law firm Freshfields has advised BAE Systems on two separate placings of Air Astana global depositary receipts (GDRs) in March 2026 and December 2025 to conclude the sale of BAE Systems’ entire 49% stake in Air Astana since its investment as a founding joint venture partner with the Kazakhstan government in 2001 and Air Astana’s IPO in 2024.
In 2023/2024, Freshfields also advised BAE Systems on Air Astana’s IPO and listings of shares and GDRs on the London Stock Exchange, Astana International Exchange and Kazakhstan Stock Exchange.
The Freshfields team was led by Richard Ho and Piers Prichard Jones and included teams advising on corporate, tax and regulatory issues.
