About

Jakob is an associate in our Vienna antitrust, competition and trade team. He specialises in international, European, and Austrian competition law, with a focus on antitrust, state aid, and merger control.

He advises on national and cross-border merger transactions, litigation matters, and antitrust and regulatory compliance for clients across a wide range of industries, including technology and media, infrastructure, and energy.

Based in our Vienna office, he has also been seconded to our Washington, D.C. office. Jakob is admitted to practice as an attorney-at-law in the State of New York, and holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from Harvard Law School as well as a PhD (Dr. iur.) from the University of Vienna.

Prior to joining Freshfields, Jakob served as Deputy Chief of Staff to the Attorney General in the Austrian Ministry of Justice, as a Policy Advisor in the Austrian Parliament, and as a lecturer in Criminal Law at the University of Vienna.

Beyond his legal practice, Jakob has published scholarly work on topics such as criminal law and international human rights law, criminology, and public law. His writing has been recognised with multiple awards and grants for both scientific and literary work, conferred by institutions including the City of Vienna, the Austrian Society for Criminal Law, the Austrian Ministry of Justice, and the Austrian Ministry for Arts and Culture.

He speaks German, English and French.

  • Majority owners Audi, Aptiv, and Infineon on the EUR 625 million sale of TTTech Auto to NXP

  • DSV on the EUR 14.3 billion acquisition of Schenker AG from Deutsche Bahn

  • Spectris on the EUR 133.5 million acquisition of Piezocryst from AVL

  • EVN on the structured bidding process and the ultimate EUR 100 million sale of WTE to STRABAG, in particular regarding state aid- and antitrust compliance, as well as merger control
