Osamu Tanabe

Osamu Tanabe is a senior consultant in the Antitrust, Competition and Trade Group at Freshfields' Tokyo office.

Joining the Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) in 1988, he has over 35 years of experience in antitrust law enforcement, until he retired in 2024. He held a number of positions at the JFTC, including Director, Mergers and Acquisitions Division, Director, Investigation Division I and V, as well as Director General, Investigation Bureau. Throughout his career, Osamu has been involved in numerous high-profile cases, including international cartel investigations, large-scale cartel and bid-rigging cases, digital platform-related matters, and merger reviews.

He is also a professor at Hakuoh University, Faculty of Law from April 2024.
