Hans is a Principal Associate in our financial services regulatory team in Frankfurt.
He advises clients from both regulated and unregulated sectors on EU and German financial services and markets regulation. His practice spans banking and payment services, investment services and asset management, FinTech, anti-money laundering, capital markets issuer and investor obligations, market infrastructure, and the market abuse regime.
He assists clients in navigating complex regulatory questions and creating effective solutions for regulatory challenges in a wide range of matters, including in connection with:
- Market entry requirements in Germany and the EU (including licences, licence exemptions, cross-border operations, and EU passporting)
- Feasibility assessments of financial services business models and products
- Compliance reviews and enhancements of governance, business organisation, processes, and conduct
- Outsourcing arrangements and ICT services in the financial sector
- Supervisory investigations, enforcement proceedings, applications, requests, and other engagements with financial regulators and authorities (including BaFin, the Bundesbank, the ECB, and the SRB)
- Incident response and internal investigations
- Dispute resolution and litigation before German and EU courts
- Financing transactions, corporate finance and cash management
- Mergers and acquisitions, and restructurings
Hans speaks German and English.
Hans completed his legal education at Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz (Germany), the University of Antwerp (Belgium), and the London School of Economics (UK). He conducted his legal training (Referendariat) at the Higher Regional Court of Koblenz, including a stage at the European Central Bank in banking supervision. At the University of Mainz, he also pursued doctoral research in financial regulation and financial consumer protection.
He is admitted to practice in Germany and before the EU courts (Rechtsanwalt). He holds a PhD in law from Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz and an LLM from the London School of Economics.
