Álvaro Puig is a Senior Associate in our Antitrust, Competition and Trade practice.
Álvaro's practice covers all aspects of competition law, including merger control, behavioural matters and antitrust compliance, as well as foreign direct investment (FDI).
Álvaro has more than 10 years' experience advising global corporate clients, financial sponsors and institutional investors on complex cross-border mandates across a wide variety of sectors, including healthcare, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, industrial and TMT. He regularly acts in multi-jurisdictional merger control proceedings before EU and other global regulators, and in multi-jurisdictional FDI proceedings.
He has also worked in the Brussels antitrust, competition and trade team and has been seconded to the Paris office. Before entering private practice, he completed traineeships at the Merger Case Support and Policy Unit of the Directorate-General for Competition (DG COMP) of the European Commission and at the legal service of the former Spanish Competition Authority (CNC).

- Advising a leading Spanish energy company on the EU and international merger control aspects of its strategic partnership to develop a major platform in renewable energy.
- Advising Cinven on the EU merger control aspects of its acquisition of Idealista, the leading online real estate classifieds platform in southern Europe.
- Advising JT International Iberia on its successful appeal before the Spanish High Court (Audiencia Nacional), which ultimately annulled the €10m fine imposed by the CNMC in its tobacco antitrust investigation.
- Advising APG Asset Management on the merger control aspects of its acquisition of a majority stake in Itínere Infraestructuras.
- Advising Cinven on the multi-jurisdictional merger control aspects of its reinvestment in Ufinet Latam.
- Advising Renault Group on the global FDI aspects of its powertrain technology joint venture with Geely and the subsequent minority investment by Aramco.
- Advising Cinven, KKR and Providence on the merger control aspects related to the €3bn public takeover bid for the entire share capital of MasMóvil.
- Advising HOCHTIEF on the merger control aspects of its acquisition of toll-road operator Abertis, alongside ACS and Atlantia.
- Advising a global payments technology company on the merger control aspects and antitrust implications of the sector-transforming merger between the three domestic card payment systems in Spain.
- Advising Boehringer Ingelheim on the global merger control aspects of its $22bn asset swap with Sanofi.
