About Samuel Trujillo

Sam is an associate in Freshfields’ international arbitration group based in Frankfurt.

He specialises in international arbitration with a particular focus on investment arbitration and advises corporations and States in a variety of sectors, including energy, infrastructure, and financial services, in arbitration proceedings under various arbitration rules.

Prior to joining the firm, Sam advised the government of Colombia in several of its first investment arbitration disputes and in the negotiation of investment treaties. He was also an associate in the banking and finance team of Colombia's largest law firm, focusing on project finance.

Sam is a Colombian qualified lawyer, holds an LL.M. from the University of Cambridge and speaks English and Spanish.

  • Representing an Eastern European country in an ICSID arbitration brought under the Energy Charter Treaty by the Austrian holding company of a local oil refinery.
  • Representing a financial services provider in ICSID arbitration proceedings brought under the Energy Charter Treaty against a Western European country in relation to investments in the renewable energy sector.
  • Representing a construction company in ICSID arbitration proceedings brought under the Energy Charter Treaty against a Central European country in relation to investments in the renewable energy sector.
  • Advising a multilateral development bank in relation to credit agreements with State entities in Eastern Europe.
  • Advising an international financial institution in relation to the extension of political risk insurance in Central and West African States.
  • Advising a construction company in relation to a distressed infrastructure project in a South American country.
