About Clemens Treichl
Clemens is an associate in the firm’s dispute resolution group and specialises in international arbitration. He is a member of the Global Projects Disputes Practice.
Clemens represents clients throughout complex international commercial and investment disputes. He has advised on high-value proceedings under various arbitration rules, including the DIS, ICC, ICSID, LCIA and VIAC Rules. He has particular experience with disputes arising from major construction and infrastructure projects and cross-border M&A, with a focus on the aerospace, engineering, natural resources, renewable energy and telecommunications industries.
Clemens is qualified to practice as an attorney-at-law in New York State and Austria. He holds law degrees from the University of Vienna and Columbia Law School, from which he graduated as a James Kent Scholar. Before joining Freshfields, he focused on matters of public international law and the law of international institutions.
Clemens speaks English, German and French.

- STRABAG SE and others in an ICSID arbitration against the Federal Republic of Germany under the Energy Charter Treaty (ICSID Case No ARB/19/29).
- A multinational telecommunications group in an ICC arbitration relating to the sale of a fixed network provider and the seller group's accounting practices in relation to the licensing of certain CPE.
- A Swiss industrial holding with interests in complex engineering in a Czech law-governed LCIA arbitration involving forensic analyses of the target's administration of VAT and allegations of MTIC fraud.
- A German engineering contractor regarding potential claims arising out of a design and supply agreement, an underlying advance payment bond and associated export credit guarantees.
- A global leader in the chemicals industry on winding down the contractual relationship with a key Russia-based supplier following various sanctions programmes in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
- A strategic investor in the elderly care industry in a DIS arbitration involving claims for fraudulent inducement.
- A leading aeroplane manufacturer in the context of various settlement negotiations with suppliers and in a German law-governed ICC arbitration relating to warehouse logistics services.
