Financial Times names Freshfields as ‘Most Innovative Law Firm’ in Asia-Pacific

  • Freshfields named ‘Most Innovative Law Firm’ among international law firms at FT Innovative Lawyers Asia-Pacific Awards 2021
  • Firm also picks up award in ‘Social Justice’ category for legal tech project for longstanding pro bono client

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer (‘Freshfields’) has won the awards for ‘Most Innovative Law Firm (international)’ and ‘Social Justice’ at the FT Innovative Lawyers Asia-Pacific Awards 2021.

The awards programme celebrates the most innovative legal work from lawyers working in law firms and in-house at companies across the region. Submissions are independently researched and judged against other submissions in each category, with innovations and innovators evaluated for originality, leadership and impact. The overall ‘Most Innovative Law Firm’ winner is determined by the aggregate score achieved by each firm across all of its submissions.

“I’m thrilled that we have been named ‘most innovative international law firm in Asia-Pacific’, as well as being recognised for our commitment to social justice,” said Tom Ng, Freshfields’ Asia managing partner. “These wins are a testament to the incredible resilience, teamwork and can-do attitude of our people even at a time of unprecedented challenges, so this award is for all of them.”

The firm’s win in the ‘Social Justice’ category was based on its work developing the ‘HK Asylum Guide’ app for pro bono client Justice Centre Hong Kong. The app provides Justice Centre’s clients with a simple, step-by-step guide to help asylum seekers in Hong Kong understand their legal rights. For more information on the project, click here.

In addition, the firm was shortlisted in the following categories:

  • Law Firm Leader (China Chairman Teresa Ko)
  • Sustainability (for our work advising on the Hong Kong Competition Commission’s investigation of the Hong Kong Seaport Alliance)
  • Practice of Law - Liquidity & Finance (for our work helping Chinese clients to navigate European foreign investment regulatory hurdles)

These awards build on the firm’s track record of success at the FT Innovative Lawyers Asia-Pacific Awards after former Asia managing partner Georgia Dawson – now the firm’s Senior Partner – was named an ‘Innovative Leader’ at last year’s FT Innovative Lawyers Asia-Pacific Awards.
