Freshfields hires new co-head of financial services in Asia

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer (‘Freshfields’) has appointed Matthew O’Callaghan to the partnership as co-head of financial services, Asia. He will be based in Hong Kong.

Matthew joins the firm from Goldman Sachs, where he held a number of roles in various locations over the past 10 years, most recently in Sydney where he held the role of managing director and senior counsel. Earlier in his career, Matthew was also an associate at Freshfields in London. He is dual qualified in New South Wales and England & Wales and will commence practice in Hong Kong as a Registered Foreign Lawyer.

“The Asia partners are very pleased to welcome Matthew back to Freshfields,” said Asia managing partner Georgia Dawson. “Matthew brings a wealth of valuable investment  banking and financial services experience and I am confident that he will further strengthen our market-leading financial services practice.”

“I’m honoured to be re-joining Freshfields and I’m very much looking forward to the chance to work alongside many colleagues who I worked with 15 years ago,” said Matthew O’Callaghan. “After many years working as in-house legal counsel, I am excited by the prospect of returning to private practice, finding solutions for our clients and tackling the challenges that lie ahead.”
