Freshfields strengthens criminal law practice with new counsel

Daniel Travers, a distinguished defence lawyer, is moving to Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP in November as counsel and will strengthen the criminal law team led by Simone Kämpfer. He is joining from Krause & Kollegen, one of the leading boutique criminal law firms in Germany.

Daniel has extensive experience in advising companies as well as in defending individuals with regard to criminal law matters and represents his clients' criminal law interests both in and out of court. He further focusses on criminal law related compliance advice and internal investigations. Like Simone Kämpfer, who joined Freshfields in February 2018 and heads the white-collar defence group in Germany, Daniel will be based in Freshfields’ Düsseldorf office.

Simone Kämpfer, criminal law partner: "Daniel Travers is a renowned and ambitious corporate defence lawyer who will enrich our team with his expertise and personality. We are very much looking forward to working with him."

Helmut Bergmann, Managing Partner Continental Europe, adds: "We have sustainably expanded our strong position in the field of criminal law and compliance in recent years. Daniel Travers will undoubtedly continue to drive the successful development of the practice forward with his experience and exceptional know how, both in Germany and internationally."

Daniel Travers: "Freshfields has an outstanding criminal law and investigations team and, with Simone Kämpfer having joined, has impressively affirmed its commitment to criminal law in a global law firm. I'm very much looking forward to supporting this team with my experience as a defence lawyer in commercial criminal law matters."

With its criminal law and investigations team excellently connected on an international level, Freshfields covers the entire range of compliance and criminal law advice for companies, working together closely both across practice areas and borders. The team around partners Norbert Nolte, head of the firm’s dispute resolution practice in Germany and Austria, and Simone Kämpfer, is already one of the most highly recognised practices in the field of criminal law and internal investigations in the German market."

Freshfields has continuously expanded its renowned criminal law practice globally with a series of high-profile hires: Ben Morgan moved from the Serious Fraud Office in London in 2017 to be a partner in Freshfields' London office; previously Dan Braun joined Freshfields from the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., strengthening the team as a partner at the Washington office.
