About Joseph Spadafore

Joseph is trained in common and civil law and specializes in international law and arbitration. His practice focuses on disputes in Latin America and he has acted in investment treaty arbitrations in English and Spanish. He has advised clients in arbitration proceedings under ICC, LCIA and ICSID rules concerning disputes across a variety of sectors including oil and gas, electricity, infrastructure and mining.

Investment treaty arbitration:

  • Representing Akfel Commodities in an ICSID arbitration against Turkey relating to its investment in the Turkish natural gas and energy sector.
  • Representing Glencore in an ICSID arbitration against Colombia regarding the shared use of public infrastructure.
  • Representing The AES Corporation in an ICSID arbitration against Argentina arising from measures affecting the price-setting mechanisms in the Argentine electricity generation market.
  • Representing Smurfit Holdings in an ICSID arbitration against Venezuela arising from the expropriation of its investments in the paper-packaging industry.
  • Representing Eco Oro in an ICSID arbitration against Colombia in relation to Eco Oro’s investments in a gold mine.

Commercial arbitration:

  • Representing a leading football club in arbitration proceedings.
  • Representing an oil and gas company with respect to a complex tax claim.
  • Representing a healthcare company in a post-M&A claim.
