As the former Co-head of Financial Services Asia at Freshfields, Royce has substantial experience of a wide range of legal and regulatory issues relating to financial institutions, spanning the Asia, the US and Europe.
Prior to joining Freshfieds, he was the general counsel for Citi's institutional businesses across the Asia-Pacific region and the deputy general counsel for Citi's businesses in Europe, Middle East and Africa.
Royce regularly advises various international banks, insurers, broker-dealers, payment companies, fintechs and fund managers on business sales, establishment, licensing, marketing, investigations, conduct of business and compliance issues.

During Royce’s tenure at Freshfields, his experience included:
- Advising Pacific Century Group on its $2.1bn acquisition of ING’s insurance units in Hong Kong, Macau and Thailand (now named FWD Insurance).
- Advising the Bank of Montreal on Hong Kong corporate and regulatory matters relating to its acquisition of a Hong Kong-based global asset management group.
- Advising various financial institutions and the Hong Kong Association of Banks on recovery and resolution planning issues and loss absorbing capacity/TLAC issues.
- Advising on regulatory investigations, compliance policies, conflicts of interest, restricted list procedures and information barriers, and on regulatory issues arising in M&A transactions where the target includes regulated financial services companies.
- Advising on market abuse, stabilisation and short selling, resolution and recovery plans/living wills, disclosure of interest issues, prime brokerage, custody and clearance issues, fintech, mobile money and internet-based financial services products, outsourcing and governance issues.
