About James Chapman

James is counsel in our energy, transportation and infrastructure team and a member of our global transactions group. James is based in our London office.

He has extensive experience in the energy, natural resources and infrastructure sectors, as well as experience in general finance and restructuring work.

James has worked with public sector and private sector (for both lender and sponsor) clients on a variety of mandates in  energy (especially energy transition including CCUS, hydrogen, and renewables but with significant experience in power, LNG and oil and gas) and infrastructure on project development and financing, M&A and restructuring.

During his time at Freshfields, James has spent time on secondment at ExxonMobil and ADNOC.

  • a major international energy company on the legal, risk and liability framework for the trans-national shipment and storage of CO2 from one Southeast Asia country into another

  • ZIM Shipping on its low-carbon LNG fuel bunkering arrangements
  • a North Sea operator on its suite of CCUS projects and documentation
  • the lenders on the restructurings of the EUR1.1bn Etlik and EUR800m Izmir and Kocaeli Turkish hospital PPPs
