It’s your second day today. How does that feel?
Extraordinary. The path has been a long one but it feels like a great new chapter is opening. I’m new but I’ve got a good idea of what to expect - the Vacation Scheme, the Simulated Office and the Induction Programmes have all been helpful: informative, thorough and eye-opening. Fun too.
The Vac Scheme seems short and given it’s such a fast paced environment, was it hard to get involved?
No. People gave me plenty of things to do, lots of responsibility as well. I helped my supervisor write an article about reinsurance, I drafted a letter of claim in relation to a pro bono matter she was working on. I also did some research for a partner on a possible intellectual property infringement affecting one of his clients. You can fit a lot into a few weeks.
Did the experience make up your mind for you?
Yes. During that same summer, I was also working as an assistant at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in the Hague. I was born in Serbia so the big challenge was to be professional, keep any personal feelings aside. I was interested in exploring international criminal law but in that particular field of law it’s sometimes hard to see what impact an individual can have. In commercial law, the goals are more distinct and what you do is more measurable. That to me is more satisfying. It’s genuinely international at Freshfields and so I immediately felt at home here.
