"I always had a good feeling about Freshfields from what I'd heard and read about them. At my interview, they were interested in me and what made me tick, what potential I had and what I could become. I liked that.
The quality of work you're exposed to at Freshfields is second to none and consequently, the training is the best you can get. It's very much “learning by doing”, so you really get involved in every project. And a lot of the deals are high profile. For instance, I worked on the takeover of a large restaurant chain, helping write due diligence reports. It's exciting to work on a deal then see it as headline news in the financial press.
Everyone takes their work seriously here, but it's still an enjoyable firm to work at. When you're busy, you might find yourself having to work really late at short notice. But that's always balanced out by the times when hours are more regular. As a trainee, you are encouraged to manage your own time.
I think the people here are the best thing about the firm. I've made a large network of friends."
