Our recent experience includes:
Our experience of advising in this area includes working with
- making an application to the European Court of Human Rights
on behalf of a major international financial institution
against an eastern European state, on state interventions
in the banking sector;
- representing the interests of the Principality of Liechtenstein
against the Federal Republic of Germany before the International
Court of Justice concerning reparations following the second
world war;
- arguing human rights issues before the English courts,
including submissions before the House of Lords on behalf
of the Bank of England, in its defence of proceedings brought
by the liquidators of BCCI;
- successfully arguing fundamental human rights issues in
a commercial context before the European Court of Justice,
notably in the Mannesmannrohren-Werke case on the privilege
against self-incrimination in EU competition proceedings
(the leading EU law authority on procedural human rights
issues);
- advising a major international insurance company on human rights and other corporate social responsibility issues; and
- advising on a number of pro bono matters spanning the full range of Convention rights, including the right to life, prohibition of inhuman and degrading treatment, freedoms of expression, religion and association and non-discrimination.
