Rod is managing partner of our London antitrust, competition and trade (ACT) practice group and advises on a full range of EU and UK laws on competition and State aid. He specialises in the financial services, transport, postal, consumer products, telecommunications, media and technology sectors, and advises both private and public sector clients.

Current and recent work includes advising:

  • Daily Mail and General Trust, BT and Heinz on a range of M&A transactions, industry-wide inquiries and other competition law matters;
  • The Local Media Alliance (regional newspaper publishers) on the OFT's review of the sector in connection with the Government's Digital Britain Report;
  • The UK Government on the competition and EC State aid aspects of the proposed strategic partnership between Royal Mail and a third party investor;
  • Northern Rock on the competition and EC State aid aspects of its restructuring under temporary public ownership; and on the Competition Commission's industry inquiry into payment protection insurance (PPI) services;
  • London Underground and the Department for Transport on the State aid and EC and UK competition aspects of the London Underground PPP;
  • The UK insurer Pearl Assurance on the take private of Resolution; and
  • A consortium led by international investment and specialised fund and asset management group Babcock & Brown on the antitrust aspects of the acquisition of Angel Trains from the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Rod is listed as a leading individual in Chambers Guide to the UK Legal Profession, Chambers Global, Legal 500 and PLC Which Lawyer? He joined the firm in 1990, spent a year on secondment to Reuters in 1994-5 and became a partner in 1999.
