Christian Duve has been a partner since 2002 and works in our Frankfurt office. He is a member of our dispute resolution practice group and regularly represents multi-national companies in international post-transaction arbitration proceedings as well as in shareholder and (re)insurance disputes. Christian acts on behalf of financial institutions in contentious proceedings in front of courts and regulators as well as in internal investigations. He also advises in the sports industry. As arbitrator or mediator, Christian has served in a broad range of contexts, reaching from large family estate to shareholders disputes.
Christian was born in Hamburg on 23 September 1964. Subsequent to a trainee program with Dresdner Bank AG (1983-1985), Christian completed his legal education in Wuerzburg, Caen, Geneva and Munich (1986-1992) and holds a doctor of laws degree (Dr iur) from the University of Munich (1998). Following his young-lawyers-training that included an internship with the American Arbitration Association (New York) and his work as a research fellow at the Institute for Civil Law and Civil Procedure at the University of Munich (1992-1995), Christian completed post-graduate studies at Harvard University (Master of Public Administration, MPA) as a McCloy-Scholar (Fellow of the German Scholarship Foundation, 1995-1997). During his stay, he served as Hewlett Research Fellow at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School, did research on issues relating to international commercial arbitration and served as a mediator on behalf of the Harvard Mediation Program.
Since 2001, Christian chairs the committee on dispute resolution of the German Bar Association (DAV) and, since 2000, serves as a lecturer at various universities. He regularly teaches at the University of Heidelberg. Christian has respectively authored and co-authored books and various articles on dispute resolution. Christian is a member of the International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution(CPR)’s European Advisory Committee. From 2003 to 2006, he chaired the committee on Arbitration and alternative dispute resolution of the Council of the Bars and Law Societies in Europe (CCBE). From 2004 to 2006, Christian has been a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of dispute resolution (IDR). Since 2001, he is a member of the board of the Harvard Club Rhein-Main.
Christian joined the firm in 1998. He speaks German and English fluently and has a working knowledge of French.
