The bank of the future: US regulation (September 2010)

‘The United States will go from laggard to the head of the parade if we get this legislation passed... This American legislation will be a kind of launching point for other countries.’ Paul Volcker, former chairman of the US Federal Reserve and current economic adviser to President Obama.

This report focuses on the US regulatory changes outlined in the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act and the impact these are likely to have on banks and, in turn, other jurisdictions.

It is designed primarily as an aid to those who need to make and advise on the decisions that banks face in a complex and uncertain regulatory environment, but also as useful background to the wider debate on policy and public interest.

Our November 2009 report, The bank of the future, gave an overview of how initiatives for regulatory change at global, European and UK level will shape banks in the future and we published an update in March 2010 summarising developments in the four months following our initial report.

This section of our website (Bankofthefuture.net) is dedicated to the bank of the future. It offers online access to our reports, recent developments affecting the areas covered by them and related client guides and briefings.
