The US-based members of our international arbitration group represent national and international corporations, financial institutions and governments in major arbitrations around the world under the ICC, LCIA, AAA and ICSID rules. The arbitration team complements our finance and corporate work, advising on the drafting of dispute resolution clauses and handling disputes that arise.

The firm's pre-eminence in the field of international commercial arbitration is acknowledged worldwide, most recently by Chambers Global as the Global Arbitration Law Firm of the Year for 2005. The group is a recognized leader in the high-profile new field of investment treaty arbitration under both the ICSID and UNCITRAL rules. Noting the precedent-setting win for CMS Gas Transmission on both jurisdiction and merits in the first of some 35 ICSID arbitrations against Argentina, Chambers USA wrote in its 2006 directory that the New York team's "success in such an important case speaks volumes about the level of skill inherent in this practice." The organization went on to rank partner Lucy Reed in the first tier (of six), citing clients and peers who identify her as a "great advocate" and "one of the leaders of the international arbitration Bar for a long time."

Recent experience in the US includes representing:

  • the government of Turkey in an ICSID arbitration brought under the Energy Charter Treaty by alleged Cypriot investors.
  • CMS Gas Transmission Company in the ICSID arbitration against Argentina pursuant to the US/Argentina bilateral investment treaty in connection with Argentina's emergency economic measures.
  • four energy companies considering ICSID arbitrations against Venezuela in connection with oil and gas investments.
  • a US multinational in political risk insurance claims under the LCIA rules.
  • a Russian telecommunications company in a shareholders'dispute under the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce rules.
  • the government of Pakistan in an ICSID arbitration brought by a Swiss services company.
  • an Italian construction company in an ICC arbitration in Miami with a Venezuelan petrochemical company.
  • a German chemicals company in a mediation with a US company concerning a take-or-pay contract.
  • various companies and governments in connection with enforcement of international arbitration awards in theUS courts.
