Pro bono in the US

2013/14 Global Highlights

  • We worked on 483 matters for 292 pro bono clients.
  • We recorded 56,323 pro bono hours - an all-time record for the firm, and one that we hope to break soon.
  • Over 1,100 of our lawyers undertook pro bono work this year - 42 percent of our average fee-earner headcount.

Freshfields is strongly committed to the practice of pro bono legal work in its US offices. We view pro bono as an invaluable opportunity to give back to our communities, both global and local, in a way that leverages our unique professional skills as lawyers to help people in need. Our US pro bono work is performed on the same professional basis, and to the same high professional standards, as our work for fee-paying clients.

Our US pro bono program is managed primarily by a team of associates in New York and Washington, DC, with guidance and input from partner liaisons and our Global Pro Bono team based in London. All US lawyers are encouraged not only to undertake pro bono work, but also to bring to the firm new potential pro bono opportunities of interest to them. We also welcome the opportunity to partner with our fee-paying clients on pro bono matters.

With our global reach and international experience, we are well placed to help individuals and institutions tackle pro bono problems across borders. Some recent examples include:

Access to justice

Our lawyers represent current or former inmates of a correctional facility in their case against the New York City Department of Corrections alleging failure to provide proper religious accommodations.

Microfinance

We helped FINCA International, the Washington DC-based microfinance non-profit, create a first-of-its-kind socially responsible investment partnership with development banks and investment firms. The deal created a new model for microfinance organizations to raise equity capital.

Human rights

In 2013, we successfully obtained an order preventing the deportation of a client and securing asylum for a victim of female genital mutilation.
