At Freshfields, we take our social responsibilities seriously. Our people are involved in a wide range of community volunteering and pro bono activities, and we have a team which coordinates these internationally. In China, our Freshfields in the Community (FITC) Committee drives the initiatives, comprising of representatives from our three offices. Every year, our offices take part in a 'Final Hour' appeal, which involves donating a final hour of salary to a chosen charity.
In the past few years we have supported many causes with the funds from the 'Final Hour' appeal, including installing a central heating system in a school in Yulin county, Shaanxi, in northern China; purchasing equipment for the Children’s Cancer Centre in Hong Kong, and supporting the International Justice Mission, which focuses on child slavery and human trafficking.
Our Hong Kong office holds regular volunteer days for 'Crossroads'; a relief agency that sorts and packs donated goods from Hong Kong residents and ships them to disadvantaged people in Asia, Africa, South America and Europe. Our Hong Kong lawyers also participate in the Helpers for Domestic Helpers (HDH) programme, providing paralegal advice, counselling and guidance primarily for foreign domestic helpers in Hong Kong.
Our China offices have advised the Plant a Tree Today Foundation (PATT), a British environmental charity, on its expansion into China and holds day trips for low-income families wishing to improve their English.
