Life at Freshfields : Japan

/uploadedImages/Locations/Japan/Careers/life at Freshfields..jpg

We’ve been in Japan for more than 20 years. Our office in Tokyo opened in 1988 and our first Japanese lawyers joined us ten years later.

Today we have one of the most integrated and effective law teams in Tokyo and advise a large range of local and global clients.

Our Tokyo office is a fascinating place to work. Whether you join as a lawyer, a graduate or a business services professional, you’ll be joining the team that works on some of the biggest, most high profile deals around.

The job, of course, is not always easy. But work hard and you’ll reap some great rewards.

Our work

Our work

We provide English, US and Japanese legal services to clients across a wealth of sectors.

Global clients appreciate our ability to guide them through the intricacies of Japanese law. Japanese clients like the way we can explain complex overseas regulations in language they understand.

We work across six practice areas: antitrust and competition, corporate, dispute resolution, employment/labour, finance, and real estate.

Much of our work is complex and cross-border, so we work in multi-disciplinary teams to deliver even the most difficult of deals.

Demanding it may be. Dull? Never.

Our practice areas

Our legal services are delivered across six practice areas:

  • Antitrust, competition and trade
  • Corporate
  • Dispute resolution
  • Employment, pension and benefits
  • Finance
  • Real estate

Industry groups

All our lawyers join one of the cross-practice industry groups. They work in one practice area but become knowledgeable in how the law affects a particular sector.

Our people

More than 30 lawyers work in our Tokyo office. Two thirds are bengoshi – lawyers admitted in Japan – who bring in-depth local knowledge to our team.

The bengoshi and our global lawyers work side by side to deliver the very best for our clients. Teamwork is everything to us. To work at Freshfields, you’ll need to be able to fit in easily with both clients and colleagues.

We’re always keen to hear from talented applicants, no matter what their background or nationality. Diversity is essential for the complex, challenging work we do: it brings the fresh thinking and new ideas that place us ahead of the competition.
